Yes, spring is certainly in the air and this is the time of year where we all busy ourselves with spring cleaning, tidying up the garden, getting outside and enjoying the fresh air. This is all excellent stuff – but do you ever think about giving your body an overhaul? Do you feel full of the joys of spring? Or are you still feeling sluggish and lack lustre?

At Olcote wellbeing (@Olcotewellbeing) I encourage my clients to take a holistic approach to their health. Holistic means treating the overall picture rather than singling out one particular symptom and focussing on that (although sometimes that is necessary too). A holistic approach to health encompasses everything, diet, exercise, lifestyle and attitude. Sometimes, taking a step back and asking yourself a few questions can really help you to look past the top level symptoms and discover the cause.

It is widely acknowledged these days that stress can be a factor in exacerbating illness. Stress can permeate our lives and cause problems that sometimes seem all too difficult to cope with. This can then cloud our judgement, affect our outlook, play havoc with our breathing and generally make us feel low. Then this can have a knock on effect by compromising our immune system which in turn can then make us more susceptible to illness and disease.

Reflexology helps to reduce stress by creating deep relaxation, restoring a sense of balance and well-being. It will soothe the nervous system helping you to become more calm and able to cope and see things more clearly. When a Reflexologist gives a treatment to the feet there are more than 7,000 nerves for him to stimulate, helping to open and clear neural pathways which in turn assist the body in returning to its natural rhythms.

The feet are the furthest part of the body from the heart and if the calf muscles are more sluggish in pumping the blood round, circulation can tend to stagnate in these extremities. Waste matter, like uric acid and calcium crystals can also build up in the bottom of the feet, mainly due to gravity which pulls the toxins down. A Reflexologist will have the intention of boosting the circulation in the body and also to disperse the crystal detritus through the lymphatic system.

Our body relies on thousands of parts of our body and mind to work together, too much strain on one area can knock our whole system out of kilter. The term ‘Homeostasis’ means to create a balanced state of body and mind. It is hard to know what to do when you feel out of balance or generally under-the-weather.
